Pe Nyunt Way graduated from the State School of Fine Arts in Mandalay and studied under renowned Myanmar artists Win Pe and Paw Oo Thet. He is one of the founders of Lokanat Galleries, the longest running gallery in Myanmar. A recipient of the Philip Morris “ASEAN Art Awards” in 2004, he has participated in more than 80 exhibitions including 22 overseas exhibitions and 9 solo exhibitions. He works as a full-time artist, illustrator and designer.
In his “The Heart of the 19th Century Rubbing” series, Pe Nyunt Way captures Myanmar’s 19th century parabaik (folded paper) paintings on canvas, adding a contemporary touch to the country’s rare parabaik paintings, wall paintings and wood engravings. It is his tribute to the artistic forms of Myanmar’s 19th century paintings.
