Hometown: Paungde, Bago Division
Hla Htay’s father was a famous commercial artist in their hometown of Paungde. He grew up learning art by assisting his father. Hla Htay was in love with painting and sculptures and knew he wanted to be an artist from a young age. Convinced that he would be able to follow his father’s footsteps and making a living out of creating art, he stopped school when he was in the eighth grade.
Hla Htay was a full-time commercial artist in Paungde until 2014, when he moved to Yangon as he believed he would have more opportunities to show his work to the public. His father passed away in 2007.
Hla Htay has a very cheerful personality that shows in his paintings through his use of bright colours and often whimsical style.
