Aung Zaw is a self-taught artist and one of the few in Myanmar who creates only abstract art. He started painting in 2008 and for six years, he signed off his artworks under his son’s name, Min Htet Aung, in the hope of him being an artist. Aung Zaw only started to sign his artworks in his own name in 2014 when he realised that no one can be forced to be an artist. He admires Kin Maung Yin and Soe Naing, both famous abstract artists in Myanmar. He has shown his work in four solo exhibitions and more than twenty group shows.
“I believe art is the light in the dark world.”
In his series “Stains and Me”, he tries to recreate a very distinct childhood memory of his white shirt being stained with a drop of ink. The drop of ink was a stain but also represented soul and character to him. This series is informed by how that drop of ink has impacted his life.
